Reading updates...

So, I finished reading Staying Dead, Book One of the Retrievers Series by Laura Anne Gilman. This was a fun read, my first foray into the Urban Fantasy genre. I really enjoyed the story. It was fast paced and filled with interesting characters and a very cool New York City as home to a couple of mysterious organizations. Gilman did an excellent job of world building. There's quite a bit just barely touched upon that makes this alternate NYC a cool setting and hints at quite a bit of discovery to take place in future volumes. I'm glad I purchased this (and books 2 and 3) and will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Once I returned Staying Dead to its place on my book shelf I sat there for a while pondering what to read next. I've got so many books from what I purchased last year and this year to choose from. It wasn't an easy decision, but I went with Myrren's Gift, Book One of the Quickening by Fiona McIntosh. I just purchased this trilogy yesterday and decided to give this a read.

I've just finished the opening prologue and am already hooked. I haven't ready any of her books before and I don't know why I never noticed them until recently. The prologue was very well written. It wasn't one of those history of the world things. It was an actual scene but written in such a way as to provide the reader with the overall lay of the land. A smart way to provide what would be an info-dump without it being an info-dump.

Also, I broke out my WIP and read the new opening part of chapter one that I had written earlier this year. Its the only part of the WIP I've written while I was writing the back story book. And after reading this new opening, I really like it. There are a few things to tweak here and there but overall, I think it will make for a great opening. Now I just hope I can keep that up as I rewrite the rest of what I have (turns out its about 50,000 words, not 35,000).

Dinner's just about ready. Its barbecue chicken so I won't be able to do any reading while I eat.
